When he’s in desperate need of money, Merlin’s landlord Aredian arranges and offers a magically binding contract in which Merlin is to become a ‘companion’ to Uther Pendragon’s son, Arthur. In a society where people with magic are considered to be dangerous, are labelled as freaks, and have their powers cut off from them, Merlin does whatever he can to survive the hard life he’s faced with.
If nothing else, read this because it is a lovely piece of writing in its own right, whatever its defects as a fanfic may be. The writing isn’t perfect - the characterisations are a bit iffy IMO and there are quite a few technical errors (mostly then/than and their/there) - but the whole thing is so raw and painstaking and every so often there is a total gem of a line that makes you want to copy and paste it on things and shove it into other peoples’ faces and rec it like crazy. There is no quick fix, there is no magical cure-all, and this is definitely not the Arthur you know and love, but his POV is nevertheless engaging and incredibly well done. Merlin lets him out when he comes of age, and takes on the mammoth task of turning him into a king. Basically, Uther goes mad after the death of Igraine and locks Arthur up in the dungeons as a punishment. Look, I just finished reading this and I kind of had to sit there and breathe for a few minutes after because wow. Now Merlin wants to let Arthur out to prove that he is not. When Arthur was small his Majesty locked him away because Arthur is a monster.
